Our Heritage

The Town of Lewisporte has a proud and storied heritage that reflects its deep-rooted community spirit, strategic location, and historical importance in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The area was first settled in 1876 by Robert and Elizabeth Woolfrey, who laid the foundations of community life by establishing a church and a school. Originally known as Burnt Bay, the settlement was later renamed Marshallville in honor of Wesleyan Methodist Missionary William T. Marshall. Around 1900, the name Lewisporte was adopted to recognize Lewis Miller, a Scottish entrepreneur whose logging operations played a significant role in shaping the town’s early economy.

Thanks to its deep-water port, Lewisporte quickly became a hub for fishing, logging, and shipbuilding. During World War II, the town served as an important base for Canadian Forces, supporting military operations from the nearby Gander airbase. Lewisporte’s oil storage tanks played a vital role in refueling military aircraft, making the town a strategic part of the war effort.

A poignant chapter in this history is commemorated at the Hann’s Point Memorial. Constructed in 1996, the memorial honors the five soldiers who lost their lives—and 35 others who were injured—during an accidental explosion at the site on June 25, 1942. These soldiers were protecting the critical oil storage facility when the tragedy occurred. The memorial stands today as a solemn tribute to their bravery and sacrifice, and a reminder of Lewisporte’s role in protecting the home front during wartime.

Incorporated in 1946, Lewisporte entered a transformative era through the 1950s and 60s. The town saw the installation of water and sewage systems, construction of a high school and water reservoir, and the development of a Canadian National shed and wharf. Paved streets and a local newspaper added to the town’s emerging modern identity. In 1965, a marine haul-out and service center was established to serve tuna boats, recreational craft, and inshore fishing vessels—further cementing Lewisporte’s maritime significance.

Today, Lewisporte is home to a population of approximately 3,500 and offers a wide range of recreational facilities and public amenities. These include playgrounds, ball parks, a stadium, a bowling alley, and the serene Woolfrey’s Pond Municipal Park.

While we continue to look to the future, we remain committed to preserving and honoring our past. You can explore Lewisporte’s rich cultural legacy at the By the Bay Museum, located at 166A Main Street, which offers an in-depth look at the town’s fascinating history.
