The Mike Austin Arena is an indoor arena located on Bowater Ave., the facility is home to the Lewisporte and Area Sea Hawks, the Notre Dame Figure Skating Club, and host to a number of summer & winter sporting events & competitions. Mike Austin, affectionately known as “Awesome Mike,” is a remarkable athlete hailing from Lewisporte. In the face of a lifetime of challenges, he has emerged as a beacon of hope and inspiration to our community. Despite his permanent physical and intellectual disabilities, Mike has triumphed over the odds, winning over 200 medals in a variety of sporting events at local, provincial, and national. Notably, he claimed three gold medals at the 2003 Special Olympic Winter Games in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, a gold and silver medal at the 2010 Special Olympic Games in London, Ontario, as well as a gold and bronze medal at the 2014 Vancouver Special Olympics.
Mike’s relentless dedication and unwavering competitive spirit has endeared him to the people of Lewisporte, where he is a fixture at hockey games and an avid and fiercely competitive slow pitch softball, mixed bowling, and floor hockey player.
Mike’s impact on the community goes beyond sports. He has been recognized for his sportsmanship and respect for fellow athletes and coaches, and he has received numerous awards and honors, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the symbolic “key” to the Town of Lewisporte.
Mike’s legacy is one of perseverance, determination, and community spirit, and he has earned the honor of having the Lewisporte Stadium named after him, solidifying his place as a true hero of his hometown!
